The fair comes to Canton
I Love Guangzhou
Friday, 17 April 2009 08:51
The Canton Fair opened yesterday in Guangzhou, but given the current economic climate, its no surprise that this edition is significantly more low-key than the last one six months ago. I remember the October fair through the chaos in the lobby of my hotel, which was crowded all the time as fair visitors haggled over the prices of rooms or just tried to find a place to stay. Last night, however, I couldn’t see a single hotel guest all the times that I passed through the lobby. Perhaps the second phase (Apr. 19-21) will be better, so let’s see.

The media is similarly cautious about the fair’s prospects. The China Daily noted the Canton Fair had opened “with hope”, while the Shenzhen Daily in a front-page story said that Canton Fair sellers were looking at domestic buyers instead of the foreign variety that had been popular over the last 50-odd years. China Daily story also has some useful stats.
