Infrastructure in western Sichuan is still crippled and continues to be battered by fresh aftershocks. Current reports from Xinhua and the China Daily report that nearly 70,000 have died, 21,000 are missing, more than 250,000 are injured and 5 million have been left homeless. State authorities have even estimated that direct economic losses could reach 400 to 500 billion RMB. The devastation however, has evoked a staggering outpouring of sympathy and financial support from PRD residents and organizations.
For example, Hooley's Irish Bar in Guangzhou organized a successful fundraiser, the first of many. Comments Hooley's proprietor Sean Bolster, "We raised around 35,000 RMB. Some people put in 1,000-2,000RMB." In Shenzhen, the "Yes We Care" charity party, organized by the Shenzhen Daily newspaper, was spurred by readers.
Over 150 expatriates raised 38,900 RMB for the Shenzhen Red Cross. One American, Jerry Lee Smith, even pledged U ... ... |

| But the question remains, can they beat the USA?
With the Beijing Olympics now just a handful of months away, the question on everybody's lips, more than the city's pollution concerns, more than the security, more even than the readiness of the Olympic venues, is this: how many gold medals can China win?
The sports authorities of China are playing down any ?suggestions of a record haul, or even a serious challenge against the domination of the United States, especially as the pressure mounts before early August, but any sports ?pundit worth their salary will confirm that China will surely sweep away a record number of golds in Beijing this summer.
However, the Vice Minister of China's Administration of Sport, Cui Dalin, has already used the words "sober" and ?"objective" in the same sentence in order to temper the ?public's irrepressiblly high hopes of a medal goldrush, even though China came second in golds at the ... ... |

| Property prices are falling fast all over the region, but only if you believe the media hype…
It is up for debate whether the Shenzhen land market is entering a low season following the recent recession in the local property market. In January, Shenzhen Changcheng Investment Holding Co., Ltd. bided on a budget housing site in Longhua, Baoan District for RMB 4,501psm, a significant step-down from previous land sales completed in the last year in the same neighborhood. Observers are questioning whether the "Diwang" (premium site) will disappear.
Land prices do vary from site to site, and are subject to the location, development conditions and other appended restrictions imposed by the government. In addition, local developers tend to give cold shoulders to budget housing sites with various limitations. Therefore, the cool reception to the recent land sale should not necessarily signal a decline in Shenzhen's land market. Land resources are scare in the city, ... ... |

| Governments and charities cling together after "devastating" blizzards
The Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) announced in February that it had received more than 60 million yuan ($8.35 million) in donations to help the worst-hit areas around China, including Guangdong.
Of this figure, some 28 million yuan was received in local branches around the country. These donations have now been sent to each of the hazard zones affected by the short but freakishly cold Chinese winter.
Even now, many charity events are still being carried out, including traditional Chinese opera performances, local fundraising get-togethers, and special balls. The RCSC, however, is still calling on the public to donate cash and necessary items for those in the snow-hit areas of east and south China, as well as remote poverty-stricken villages. In particular, they still urgently need food, medicine, quilts, winter coats and other supplies. To this end, cash donations are being greatly encourag ... ... |

| A blossoming business is predicted (what's new?)
2007 saw great economic success in Guangdong with a GDP of RMB3 trillion, surpassing Taiwan for the first time. But, in 2008, will the local economy keep a steady and healthy growth? And where do local businesses stand in this competitive market?
Wu Kaili, president of Guangdong General Chamber of Commerce (GGCC), shared his insights and advice with us. Wu expressed great confidence for 2008. The regional GDP has surpassed three of the "Four Dragons in Asia", Korea, Singapore and Taiwan. The increasing flow of
foreign investment into Guangdong will also help set a new high in economy in 2008.
GGCC, a membership based organization founded in 2003, has established cooperation with many local and national corporations, as well as foreign chambers of commerce. This helps create a sound network for foreign investors which attracts not only fortune 500 corporations but also small/medium-scaled foreign businesses int ... ... |

| Housekeepers fly home while local families scratch heads, wash dishes.
WORKERS' FLIGHT:
As Spring Festival fever approaches, local families have been hit by the increasingly popular trend of migrant nannies packing up for the holidays and heading back home.
Top nanny agencies across Guangzhou and Shenzhen confirmed they are suffering a "serious shortage" and that many families will have "no child supervisors" during China's most important traditional festival.
It is believed that around 63 percent of all household workers in the Pearl River
region are heading home for Chinese New year, the majority not to return until the Lantern Festival on February 21. "Guangzhou now needs at least 70,000 housekeepers over the holidays," said Chen Ting, president of Guangdong Household Management Association. In Shenzhen, the shortage is estimated to be around 55,000.
The baby boom in 2007 (the auspicious Year of The Pig) has only intensified th ... ... |
