Macau by Jia Wei Tan Best beach for black sand Hác-Sá Beach Just beyond Cheoc Van Beach is Hác-Sá Beach, where your eyes will be deceived by a long curving stretch of unique black-tinged sand. Hác-Sá means 'black sand', and it is indeed an intriguing colour of deep silvery grey. Longer than Cheoc Van, this beach is also Macau's most popular beach with swimmers and sunbathers. Not only is Hác-Sá pretty long (around 1,300m), it also boasts some incredibly smooth sand, which has been well known as one of the "Eight Scenes in Macau". It's also the perfect place for stargazing at night, by the way... Hác-Sá used to be the best natural beach in Macau, yet it has been beaten by erosion somewhat over the years. However, due to the lovely texture of the sand, you'll feel comfortable sunbathing (warning: the color of the sand means it gets extremely hot during these long hot summer day ... ...

A touch of emerald green. It's been couple years since McCawley set up shop in Seaworld and yet it still brings in the drinkers. It's a slice of Hibernia in Shenzhen, with predictably woody trappings and decked out with the Irish paraphernalia ( more Joyce, please!) Happy hours from 10am-8pm where you can enjoy Carlsberg for 22RMB. After 8pm, this goes up to 27RMB. No city is complete without an Irish bar, but here you can enjoy live rock music on the second floor (from 10pm). With a roof garden and outdoor seating, it's also much more than a bar/restaurant. In fact, it's something of a community meeting place, rather like a typical pub in Ireland, only with a twinge of Eastern flavor. Shop No.118, Seaworld, Shekuo, Nanshan Dist, Shenzhen (0755 2668 4496) 麦考利,深圳市南山区蛇口海上世界118号 Daily 10am-2am. Pachuca anacrusis doorway dysraphism kindliness. While high-profile exhibitions such as the Guangzhou Triennial have opened Chinese audiences' eyes to avantgarde contemporary art, they have little to do with the PRD art scene, which needs a more accessible, grass-roots platform for local independent artists to emerge from the underground. Fortunately, some concerned organizations and individuals are already working on that, and among them, Guangzhou-based American sculptor and art teacher Daniel. M. Krause is certainly worth giving credit to for his effort in making the "Karakul – Guangzhou's Contemporary Arts Festival" happen. "No matter where you come from, as long as you're living and making art in Guangzhou, Karakul is a way letting everybody see these original works produced here," claims Krause. Krause, who came to Guangzhou in 1988 for his MFA at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, was supposed to go back to the States and work in special effects in Hollywood. However, t ... ...

It is said that music is a universal language that transcends boundaries. For this reason, it has always played an important role in communication and cultural exchange between different nations around the world. One example of this is the weeklong outdoor "Germany Promenade" music festival to be held this month, which is part of the friendship-building "Germany and China – Moving Ahead Together" project. In August 2007, a series of interactive programs between the two countries, focusing on areas such as economy, technology, education and culture, was officially launched in the hope of increasing mutual understanding and establishing a foundation for long-term cooperation. After being successfully held in Nanjing and Chongqing, the project came to Guangzhou in late September, bringing with it business opportunities, new concepts and traditional German culture to the PRD region. For music lovers, it's the chance to witne ... ...

"It's fair to say that Trio Tarana is without precedent in the world of improvised music," says AllAboutJazz.com. And that's no overstatement as you listen to their creative interpretations of various Asian musical traditions, which include the music of Japanese Taiko Drum Ensembles, Afghani folk songs, Hindu chants and North/South Indian rhythm cycles. Such diversity benefits greatly from the extensive musical knowledge of Ravish Momin, percussionist/composer as well as the trio's soul. Born in India and now living in New York City - the world's cultural melting pot, Momin had long wanted to create music that could not only utilize his Indian roots, but also reflect the diverse influences of the wide range of great musicians he has played with. Trio Tarana was created in 2003 to accurately mirror Momin's hybrid identity of music. With violinist Sam Bardfeld and oud/lute player Brandon Terzic joining in, the diversity of their music has bee ... ...

we all know something about Beijing opera, but what most of us don't know that it was greatly influenced by the style of Kunqu opera, which has a much longer history of more than 600 years. Originating in the Kunshan region of Jiangsu Province, Kunqu opera has a complete system of acting and its own distinctive tunes. Because of this, it was named as a "Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity" by UNESCO in 2001. Over centuries, a great many works have been created in the Kunqu opera repertoire. "The Peach Blossom Fan" written by Kong Shangren in 1699 is considered one of the best. Set in Nanjing against the backdrop of the handover of power from the Ming Dynasty to Qing Dynasty, the play tells the story of the beautiful courtesan Li Xiangjun and the scholar Hou Fangyu, with a peach blossom folding fan representing the couple's love and separation – a reflection of dramatic social changes. To pay homage to t ... ...

Born in Lyons, France in 1963, Juan Carmona, considered "one of the most creative guitarists of the new flamenco generation", has always been proud of being a descendent of the guitar playing Habichuelas dynasty of Granada, Spain. Carmona started playing music at the age of 10 after receiving his first guitar from his father, and his virtuosity quickly became apparent to professional musicians. Later, Carmona studied at the prestigious National Conservatory of Music in Paris, where he obtained his degree. At age 26, he became the first professor of flamenco guitar holding a state-awarded diploma. Yet to achieve genuine recognition for his art, Carmona decided to visit the land of his ancestors at Jerez de la Frontera in Andalucía – the cradle of flamenco music. This October, audiences in Guangzhou can either groove to head-spinning Nordic electronic beats, or visit the Xinghai Concert Hall to enjoy a world-class symphony concert by violinist Hilary Hahn, conductor Bramwell Tovey and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. At the age of 28, Grammy Award winner Hilary Hahn is one of the most sought-after artists on the international concert circuit, and was named "America's Best Young Classical Musician" by Time Magazine in 2001. The Virginia-born violinist started playing music at a tender age and has studied under the guidance of renowned music teachers. Taking additional elective courses in languages, literature and drama helped Hahn form her innovative interpretations and thoughtful musicianship. Hahn now records exclusively for Deutsche Grammophon and has so far released four albums, all of which have received much critical acclaim and spent weeks on the Billboard Top Ten list.
