Musical diplomacy

It is said that music is a universal language that transcends
boundaries. For this reason, it has always played an important
role in communication and cultural exchange between
different nations around the world.
One example of this is the weeklong outdoor "Germany
Promenade" music festival to be held this month, which is part
of the friendship-building "Germany and China – Moving Ahead
Together" project.
In August 2007, a series of interactive programs between
the two countries, focusing on areas such as economy, technology,
education and culture, was officially launched in the hope
of increasing mutual understanding and establishing a foundation
for long-term cooperation.
After being successfully held in Nanjing and Chongqing, the
project came to Guangzhou in late September, bringing with it
business opportunities, new concepts and traditional German
culture to the PRD region. For music lovers, it's the chance to

Sound that Shatters Glass

Lucas Abela's earliest memory was "going through the windshield
of the family car with my Mom and Dad."
It's no surprise then, that his stunningly original noisecapes,
involving contact mics and effects pedals are produced through an
act of annihilation- glass and body. Lucas smashes and bites the
glass into tiny fragments, then walks over them barefoot to reach his
spit and blood-soaked audience. "Justice Yeldham and the Dynamic
Ribbon Device" is the name of his act and he has performed in basements,
hallways, clubs and festivals all over the world. During his
last visit to the PRD, he sprayed blood all over Babyface. This month
marks the return of "Justice Yeldham" to Guangzhou as part of his
Asian Tour.
Noise as a genre has been spreading all over the world in the last
decade. Cassette tape labels are more often seen than CD's or LP's.
During the mid 1990s in the U.S., labels like Hanson Records, RRR
and American Tape ... ... |

An Introduction to Chinese Philosophy
|

AUTHOR : Karyn L. Lai AVAILABLE : Now
Chinese philosophy continues to exert a profound
influence on modern China, in ways that are often little understood
by visitors from abroad. Fortunately, help is at hand, for
while Karyn L. Lai's introductory guide to Chinese philosophy is
intended as an undergraduate textbook, it will also be useful for
waiguoren who want to start exploring the country's culture and
history in more depth. It seems easier, of course, to tackle something
like Daoism when it is repackaged as bite-sized chunks
of self-help wisdom or explained with reference to Winnie the
Pooh, but the advantage of a book like Lai's is its rigour and
scope. Although her explanations are sometimes a little dry
and repetitive, in "An Introduction to Chinese
Philosophy" the author manages very successfully
to outline the most important traditions, from
Confucianism and Daoism to Legalism and Mohism, while locating
them within ... ... |

The Cantonese simply can't say no to chicken

It's a known fact that Cantonese people love to eat
chicken. So it came as no surprise when we saw You
Ji Hui- a restaurant that decided to dedicate its whole
menu to chicken dishes. What intrigued us was that
You Ji Hui offered 3 levels of spiciness for their signature
dish – Braised Chicken (烧鸡公88RMB for 1.5
kg): normal, extreme and suicidal. We managed to
keep our sanity in check and ordered the entry level
of spiciness, and it was fiery enough! Cooked with
Hunan dried chilies and heaps of ginger, the well-flavored
chicken was addictively spicy while leaving a
tingling sensation long after. The Beer Chicken (啤酒
鸡 38RMB/half) was another enticing treat which had
a sweet and sour sauce followed by a matching taste
of beer. We were impressed with the properly cooked
scrambled egg (茶子油炒蛋 23RMB) fried with cha zi
you, a special oil from Hunan that gave the runny egg
an earthy touch. It might take a couple more spicy

The season of crabs

A single crab costs 460RMB? Yes, and it's well worth every
fen. This is not your average mud crab. It's called Huang
You crab (黄油蟹 mud crab with roe), and it's in season from
late June till the end of August every year. Much like hairy
crabs, Huang You crabs are loved for their creamy roe, and
they have golden roe all over their bodies even down to the
joints, which certainly is a rarity. That's the main reason why
Huang You crabs are so highly sought after. Cheng Long
Hang is a reputable Huang You crab and hairy crab supplier
with branches all over the South China region, but little
do people know that the Dongshan outlet steams live crabs
for those who crave an absolute fresh taste. The store is only
a small grocery with a few fish tanks where the crabs are
kept, but their loyal customers simply don't mind savoring
hundreds of yuan worth of crustaceans around two shabby
tables. Delicate crabs such as Huang You are best steamed
with p ... ... |

Wai Po Cai Guan (grandma's restaurant) offers not
only a comforting name, but also a variety of homestyle
dishes that are native to Nanxiong, a city in
northeastern Guangdong. Given Nanxiong's proximity
to Hunan, chili is often used in cooking, while
pickled vegetables are very popular. Just when we
wondered if the flavors would be altogether indistinguishable,
the difference in texture provided the
answer. The pickled bamboo shoots in the duck
stew (酸笋焖鸭 38RMB) were exquisitely tender,
while the pickled taro shoots (芋禾炒花肉 25RMB)
which were fried with streaky pork, were crunchy,
mildly spicy and definitely inspiring. Their signature
eggplant dish (南亩擂茄子 15RMB) was a whole
eggplant served in a set of mortar and pestle, as
we needed to mash the tasty goodness for the
flavor to come through. The soothing taste of the
eggplant was complimented with a ginger and
green onion sauce. Finally, we concluded our
meal with home-made rice win ... ... |

Star Street
At the end of the nineteenth century Hong Kong 's first power station started operation in Wanchai on Electric Street and its surrounding streets were named after the classic Chinese verse of the three luminaries: sun, moon, and stars. Known for the iconic Hong Kong low-rise tenement blocks, Wanchai has started a swift march towards gentrification and the Star Street neighborhood has become a bohemian blend of galleries, cafés, studios and street markets. There is the only Agnès b. Librairie Galerie outside of Paris which offers local artists the opportunity to showcase their work as well as exhibiting international photography, installation, painting etc. At the bottom of the street on Queen's Road East is a spectacular showroom of simple yet sophisticated furniture and home accessories from local design firm OVO home. At the top of the street is MingCha, a modern teahouse whose concept is & ... ... |

| Aside from its refined presentation and light nature, Cantonese cuisine is also characterized by a great variety of stir fries which are loved by all guangzhouren. Xin Wei Dao is a new addition to the Cantonese dining scene and specializes in a wide selection of modified "siu chao", meaning a healthier approach to food. The Chicken dish (私房回味鸡 38RMB/half) is a well-thought mix of shredded succulent chicken breast and earthy vegetables. The food here is kept rich in taste while light in body, such as the Ginger Fried Goose (棕屏大屋姜煎鹅 38RMB)- its intense flavor
is finely contrasted by a hint of tart ginger. The Streaky Pork Belly (南乳猪肉 28RMB) is a homey dish cooked professionally and will satisfy any picky Guangzhou taste. Despite the somewhat
small portions, the pricing is very reasonable and the cozy atmosphere makes for a relaxing dining experience. It's worth your time.

| This is probably the most humble-looking bar in town, with next to zero décor and absolutely unflattering furnishings. Yet, a great number of locals like to hang out here. Why? Well their cheap drinks may be one of the reasons (bottled beers are sold at8RMB-15RMB), but more importantly Open Air Bar is a designated "meet spot" for all radio fans. The owner is a radio fanatic himself and thinks radio is a form of effectivecommunication, especially in this time of great crisis. Recently, his radio team offered sterling help in radio communication with the earthquake-struck areas in Sichuan. In the past, OAB has organized urgent aid to help people in critical times. Charity volunteers and radio fans aside, OAB also attracts a group of locals that are into their arts, as it's located inside a movie theater and there is a photo studio on the second floor. In short, it's an ideal place to chill out, mingle with locals, and maybe learn a new thing or two. Oh, and don't ... ... |
