The sound of sizzle. As soon as you see the array of sake displays at the bar next to the entrance, you know this is going to be a decent Japanese restaurant. Better yet, it’s a grill house that marries Japanese cooking principles with Western ingredients. Imported beef is grilled to order out of its sealed packaging in the open kitchen, and served with fries and side salad. Doesn’t sound Japanese? Well, a selection of homemade sauces with heavy Japanese influences is what really sets the mark. To pair the food with Takara Sho Chu (a popular Japanese rice wine) will give your usual Western dining experience a new twist. And before you roll your eyes at such a concept, it’s actually a popular form of dining in Japan and probably a healthier approach to maintaining your favorite diet. Worth a viewing.  3/F, Victory Plaza, Tiyu Xi Lu, Tianhe District, Guangzhou (020 3879 5339)  广州市天河区体育西路维多利广场3层 Opening hours: 11am-midnight  Payment: all ... ...

Farmer's cuisine may sound undesirable to many, but recently a quest for such food is on the rise in town. Why? Over-indulgent foodies simply want a rustic, back-to-basic alternative for a change. Farmer's cuisine is thus welcome for its simple approach to food, which means absolutely fresh ingredients (steamed or boiled) and minimal seasoning.   Nong Jia Ji Zhuang prides itself in just that. Most of the ingredients come daily from Conghua. The Farmer's Tofu (农家豆腐 20RMB) is made with natural spring water and carries a silky texture, while the Steamed Fish (清蒸山塘鱼 25RMB) is screamingly fresh and pleasantly light. A hill of shallots and perilla leaves sitting on the Farmer's Chicken (红葱头油淋农家鸡 30RMB/half) makes a clear statement that presentation is not their first priority, and rightfully so, as the taste is more than satisfactory. This is certainly not a restaurant for romantic dates or intimate gatherings, but one that offers a homey atmosphere and tasty, value for m ... ...

Aside from its refined presentation and light nature, Cantonese cuisine is also characterized by a great variety of stir fries which are loved by all guangzhouren. Xin Wei Dao is a new addition to the Cantonese dining scene and specializes in a wide selection of modified "siu chao", meaning a healthier approach to food. The Chicken dish (私房回味鸡 38RMB/half) is a well-thought mix of shredded succulent chicken breast and earthy vegetables. The food here is kept rich in taste while light in body, such as the Ginger Fried Goose (棕屏大屋姜煎鹅 38RMB)- its intense flavor is finely contrasted by a hint of tart ginger. The Streaky Pork Belly (南乳猪肉 28RMB) is a homey dish cooked professionally and will satisfy any picky Guangzhou taste. Despite the somewhat small portions, the pricing is very reasonable and the cozy atmosphere makes for a relaxing dining experience. It's worth your time.   5 Zhong Ping Li, Zhong Shan 3 Lu (8382 1988) 新味道私房菜馆,中山三路中平里5号 Opening hours: 10a ... ...

With three functioning floors, a wine cellar basement and a roof garden which provides 400 seats, this new Italian restaurant is a bold investment. The owner, however, has complete faith in Chef Raffaele, who hails from Capri, Naples, and hopes this venue will become a homey meeting spot for his fellow countrymen in Guangzhou - a place to celebrate "the sweet life". That explains the large collection of 1960s pictures shown in the dining area, which corresponds to the earthy furnishings and creates a nostalgic feel. The menu is kept simple and mainly offers South Italian cuisine. We were delighted to see the food was hearty and rustic. The Mozzarella Fritta (45RMB) with airy Mozzarella cheese in a light golden crust was a heart warming starter. Served in a generous portion, the Gnocchi alla Sorrentina (55RMB) had a buttery taste followed by the soothing richness of creamy tomato sauce. At the time of writing, the restaurant was still busy with its finishing touches, b ... ...

A new classic Cantonese diner.   Four Seas In One Wu Zhou Zhuang Shi Cheng, Luo Pu Street, Panyu District (3470 2688/3470 0222) 四海一品,番禺区洛浦街五洲装饰城沿江路段(新光快线番禺沙西出口)   One might wonder what aged wood from old ships can do for our modern world. Well, with a flood of creativity, it can be applied to an intriguing interior design and turn 10,000sqm of land into an elegant and stylish restaurant. Here at Four Seas, traditional architecture is complimented with a modern touch, exquisite detailing in décor, and a huge collection of Cantonese art works. The menu also reflects the same concept, celebrating both Cantonese traditions and culinary variations of Ling Nan cuisine. Shelter Crab is definitely one of the stars on the menu. Buried in crispy garlic bits and pungent fried chillies, the sweetness of the seafood shines through the spices and leaves a finely balanced finish on the palate. The Crocodile Soup, with its condensed essence of ingredie ... ...
