| It's said that only water at 92°C can make a cup of perfect coffee, bringing out its wonderful flavor. That's why this café is so named. These two shops are in different styles and themes. If you are a meat lover and also if you need more sunshine in an outdoor garden, then come to the OCT for a steak and European-style dining environment with cozy sofas in different colors. If you are a music and book lover then just drop down into the Futian outlet for a much quieter afternoon. Climbing up the ladder seeking a good book there is like hunting in a library. Order a cup of coffee or a fresh tuna sandwich (20RMB) and spend the day listening to smooth jazz. The cakes are so-so, but it's a perfect place to be alone or to meet with friends. You will find that what you need is space to breathe and time to reflect with a great cup of strong coffee.

| Where Vietnam and Thailand meet
Turn the corner behind Red Apple in the Ke Xue Guan metro station and prepare to be dazzled. Here the prices are right, the food is scrumptious and the service is top-notch. Behold Pho 168 - a restaurant that offers a mix of Vietnamese and Thai cuisine with a personal touch. If your Mandarin is lacking, take comfort in ordering in English to the gracious owner. Start with the imperial rolls or some salt and pepper fried pork and then dive in. While the establishment is quite tiny the selection you'll find is huge. You're sure to be satisfied with classics like Thai-style chicken curry, BBQ brochette or coconut chicken with fried rice. And don't leave until you've treated yourself with a glass of the imported Thailand whiskey or a taste of the mango pudding. At Pho 168 you can count on a pleasant experience and a full stomach.

Canteen
|
| Serve the people!
We didn't dare enter this canteen at the beginning because of its location – it was next to a garbage recycle station! Yet, in the name of a food hunter, the restaurant we found was interesting. Its name is Ren Min Gong She, which means "People's Commune" (a whiff of 1960s China), with a public canteen that offers homemade dishes. It's definitely worth checking out. As a matter of fact, you will be surprised to feel yourself back in 1962. Staff wear Red Army uniforms with Mao bags written with "Serve the People"(为人民服务). Wooden tables and chairs are shipshape in a village-like style. Dishes are cheap too, but it's amazingly tasty Hunan cuisine. If you don't have spicy teeth, try the Spiced Bean Curd (蛇汁香干) at 18RMB or the Crucian Carp & Radish Soup (鲫鱼萝卜锅) for the same price. But, dear comrades, don't forget to have a bowl of rice!

| The spices of Hindu...
Had one too many orders of tofu lately? Then head over to Guo Mao and put a little spice back into your dining life. After being greeted by the pleasant staff, grab a beer, plus enough water to quench the fire, and make yourself at home. In the cramped but cozy quarters of Taj Indian restaurant, you’ll find butter chicken that is just as sweet and saucy as the Bollywood videos playing near the back tables. In fact, most dishes with the word “chicken” listed in their description are near to perfection, from the chicken curry to the chicken tikka. And it isn’t possible to go wrong with any of the various versions of nan bread to choose from. Stay away from the green salad, which is really just a pile of sliced cucumbers, carrots and tomatoes, and stick with what India does best. For a little more damage, go for the buffet and don’t feel bad about going back for seconds - this food is as good as it sounds on the page!

| Italian or Japanese? You decide . . .
It’s not easy finding this place, which is sandwiched by pathways and where everything looks a little grubby and far from romantic. Needless to say, the bistro’s door is tucked in an obscure corner by a furnishing building. Well, it looks like a Japanese bistro for friends gathering for some relaxation. Press the small house door (which tinkles) and be warmly-welcomed by the young waitresses in a Japanese greeting. Right now, it’s still described as a Japanese bistro. And yet it’s an Italian restaurant - clean, small, simple, romantic, and smelling of wine. It only offers Italian fare, but yes, by a Japanese chef. What can confuse us more? OK, so let’s open the menu - ah, Italian again. We see cheap set lunches and supper dinners with free appetizers and desserts. After a dish of Spaghetti Amatriciana-Spicy in Tomato Sauce (45RMB) and Roast Chicken with potato, you will still die for the tiramisu and a sip of It ... ... |

| A nice bowl of rice porridge, anyone?
It's all a matter of rice, which plays an unmovable position for Chinese people. Rice porridge has fed the poor in past times, yet nowadays it has become a daily staple and even something of fashionable cultural statement by the Chinese youth. Yi Zhou, a seafood porridge restaurant run by designer Liang Xiaowu, owner of Mooka Space, and designed by himself, is hidden in a tiny bamboo grove in OCT LOFT and offers seafood porridge daily. It takes 20 minutes to quick cook seafood porridge in a terrine with shrimp, cell, or crab ingredients. The rice is really something, too, with only Dongbei rice fit for the taste. They usually add some salt, sesame oil, caraway, and – voila! – it is accomplished. But take caution, it's very hot. Sitting in the soft warm sunshine and tasting this humble food is not only a matter of taste, but also a matter of spirit.

| Such sweet things are made of these . . .
D'oh! There are now real doughnuts in Guangzhou! Those who have been missing these simple but highly addictive treats from back home can finally have their sugary fingers satisfied. This first endeavour comes from Taiwan and makes fresh rings every day. Expect the usual favorites such as Original Glazed, Glazed Cruller and their chocolate Iced Buddies. However, those who prefer jam-packed doughnuts will have to settle for the strawberry or lemon treats. Doughnut "holes" are also available, but are not sold individually. Rather, they come in the form of a doughnut-holed ring called "Pon De". That aside, these goodies are by far the most authentic in town. Together with a cup of strong coffee, it definitely makes a perfect breakfast or an energy-boosting snack. Just ask the cops.

| Our prayers are finally answered.
Mystic music is heard afar . . . lines of colored flags sway in the breeze . . . on the outside, a row of prayer wheels awaits long lost pilgrims. This place is for those mesmerized by Tibet - the food, the people and the wonderful culture. Although it tries to accommodate local tastes with a menu serving Tibetan food and Western favorites, Himalaya is as close as you can get to Tibet in Guangzhou. Tibetan food is probably the most rustic and unpretentious cuisine in China, if not the world. It serves few vegetables and big chunks of meat with minimal seasoning. A meal usually begins with a pot of Yak Butter Tea, a slightly salty and creamy drink ideal for the cold weather. Yak meat is used in most dishes. The Braised Yak Meat was a simple, generous plate of boiled meat which brings out the wild and rich flavour of yak. The Yak Meat Buns were more impressive with a much more condensed taste. We had a bowl of rice in yogurt - a traditio ... ... |

| The sound of sizzle.
As soon as you see the array of sake displays at the bar next to the entrance, you know this is going to be a decent Japanese restaurant. Better yet, it’s a grill house that marries Japanese cooking principles with Western ingredients. Imported beef is grilled to order out of its sealed packaging in the open kitchen, and served with fries and side salad. Doesn’t sound Japanese? Well, a selection of homemade sauces with heavy Japanese influences is what really sets the mark. To pair the food with Takara Sho Chu (a popular Japanese rice wine) will give your usual Western dining experience a new twist. And before you roll your eyes at such a concept, it’s actually a popular form of dining in Japan and probably a healthier approach to maintaining your favorite diet. Worth a viewing.

Pizza
|
| It does exactly what it says.
If it seems rather odd enough to spot a pizzeria down a small alley in an older area of Guangzhou, yet it’s probably even stranger that this is actually a French-style pizza restaurant. Eh? Created by a Frenchman who is helplessly “crazy” about pizza, this small, clean venue serves hearty pizzas at decent prices. All pizzas here use classic European crusts which have a good texture. The house special, the French Pizza, made with bacon, generous amounts of salami and earthy mushrooms, tastes as good as it sounds. Make sure to save some room for their heart-throbbing desserts, such as the Chocolate Liegeois and the Dame Blanche. It’s time to forget about the calorific red flags and dive down into some well-deserved indulgence.
