| Simply irresistible Thai flavors.
This may not look like a typical Thai restaurant - with its sleek decor which has only hints of a Thai influence, not to mention its staff all dressed in black - but the food is undoubtedly Thai. With ingredients brought in from HK and an experienced Thai chef, this eatery is set upon bringing a new Thai dining experience to the foodies in Guangzhou. The Gold Bags-shrimp, mixed with fresh basil in a crispy dry tofu wrap, were light and delightful. Although the Fried Rice Noodles with Baby Oysters fell short of expectation (the texture was just a little too soft), the Green Curry Chicken redeemed its Thai glory. With the rarely seen Thai eggplants and the infamous Thai chillies, the curry was creamy, rich in spices and had a strong after-kick. Given their reasonable prices and very attentive service, this restaurant is definitely a welcome newcomer.

| A smokin' good time.
There's an interesting mix going on here. Named after a Cuban cigar, decorated with a heavy Chinese influence and serving a menu of mostly American-style food (along with some Asian dishes) - Cohiba is a creation that reflects its owners' multicultural backgrounds. Just a turn away from a busy highway, this restaurant/bar sits on a vast space and is surrounded by blossoming trees, which induces a relaxing atmosphere. Food comes in big portions, too. The novel Toasty Pizza, using toast instead of crust and served with salsa, is a decent snack. The Char-Grilled Rosemary Lamb Kebab also has a tender texture and a distinctive charcoal flavor. As the name suggests, Cohiba cigars are on offer for those who wish to smoke it up. The place might be a bit far away, but its blend of hospitality and ambience more than makes up for its inconvenient location.

What difference will a piece of paper make? The answer is that when meat and vegetables are grilled on a piece of paper on top of an electric Teppanyaki-like hotplate, they will stay tender and succulent while maintaining a unique BBQ flavor. This new style of BBQ is a decent alternative to the omnipresent hot pots this winter, with quality meats and reasonable pricing. Originating from north China, the menu has some strong Korean influences, including Kimchi and cold noodles. Meat choices range from different cuts of beef, lamb, pork and poultry. A small selection of seafood is also available. Those who are looking for a wholesome lunch should not miss out on their set meal with one choice of BBQ meat, rice and soup for only 15-18RMB.

| When Irish eyes are smiling.
Hooley's is well-known as an Irish pub where, on any given evening, you can paint the town red, or in this case green. But let's not forget that it's also a restaurant serving hearty pub fare. From light snacks to belt-busting mains, the menu here contains all the usual favorites. Pies are a great choice if you're after something tasty and filling. The aroma from fresh baked pastry is also a pleasant appetizer and everything tastes as good as it smells. Using ground Brazilian Sirloin, and served with home-style mashed potato and gravy, the Aussie Beef Pie was an especial treat. With reasonable prices and Happy Hour specials, this is just the ticket after a hard day's work.

| A chilled-out coffee haven.
Hang on... before you even smell the coffee, you have to climb three flights of stairs to this roof top cafe. But the effort is rewarding. Transformed from a deserted balcony, this cafe has a spacious indoor area and a garden-like patio terrace, which helps bring a touch of Mediterranean exoticism to one of the oldest areas in town. The rough white walls and earthy-toned furniture also set a laidback atmosphere. With abundant natural light and the wafting fragrance of freshly brewed Lavazza coffee, you could easily spend an afternoon here in total relaxation. For wine lovers, there is a decent selection of Italian wines offered at reasonable prices. A small seasonal anti-pasto menu is also available if you're after some quick bites.

| Classic Japanese perfection.
Situated next to La Perle Plaza, this high-end Japanese restaurant attracts a mixed crowd of Japanese, expat and local customers, all of whom must have a fat pocket. The decor is down to earth and somewhat mono-toned. The 2nd floor dining area is equipped with three Teppanyaki tables and some private rooms are available on the 3rd floor. Prices are high, but quality is guaranteed. Fresh seafood and top quality beef are shipped in from Japan on a regular basis for sashimi, sushi, charcoal BBQ and Teppanyaki. Every night, the in-house Teppanyaki chef, who has 10 years of experience, will give you a cooking show, a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach. With efficient service and a relaxing atmosphere, it's a nice place to come for some exquisite Japanese treats.

| It looks like a simple bakery shop but then we consider it as a café which offers fresh coffee - although it's deeply hidden away in Jusco. Pie Edge comes from Taiwan with the aim of making its own bakery and desserts. You can taste cakes in another bakery shop but it's hard to find them offering free delivery. Needless to say, you can never order a pie with meat for delivery with a cup of hot coffee. But in Pie Edge, with various crispy pies, flannel sandwiches and subs, cute dorayakis (铜锣烧) and delicate cakes or tarts, everything is available for delivery with coffee essentials. What's more, a high-tea package is the most popular. We like the common touch of Pie Edge, so it's rather easier to ask for delivery to our home, office, meeting, lunch, high-tea, or any other party. If you are fans of pie too, why not try their recommendations, Mince & Cheese Pie or Black Pepper Chicken Pie. Delicious.

| If you are looking for quick service that will clog an artery, then come to Red Apple. Here you'll find a clean, diner-like feel and a menu made up mostly of Western dishes with a splash of Chinese staples on the lunch set. Still, you can come here to break your diet! Skip the wilted and tiny salad and dive into the sandwiches and appetizers that will fill you up on the cheap. The baked potato with sour cream and bacon, fish and chips, French fries with gravy, and onion rings are must-try items that you'll be hard-pressed to find in other "Western" establishments. Red Apple also offers typical fare such as the juicy and junky hamburgers, the chicken sandwiches and the hot spaghetti. You can crank it up a notch with dinner sets ranging from sole filets to short-ribs, including soup and salad for a little more cash and a little more fill. | Stepping into the gate of Hi Point House, you will see there are no tables or anything else to do with dining, other than a flower booth, a bakery corner, and a small cellar in front of you next to the elevator. And yes, that's the only entry. But you will be given a super warm welcome from the servers who will send you to the House. We were excited to be served like VIP guests in a graceful and fashionable space, but the point for us was the food. They offer main courses of Chinese, Japanese and Western cuisines, yet all in small sizes. The flavors, however, were extremely tasty. Were slightly amused by one dish called "Spicy Caff Ribs with Mustard and Black Pepper"(青芥黑椒牛仔骨), but were impressed with the free banana cake after dinner.

| Kamado, a super Beijing Hutong-style restaurant, famous for its traditional Japanese cuisine and its amazing pop-art tableware, has opened its second branch in Coastal City. Just like a very decent gentleman, Kamado cares beautifully for its guests. It has set zones for lovers, zones for families and zones for businessmen. In other words, privacy is paramount. Nostalgically, it completely follows traditional conventions, so everything is 100 percent homemade on the premises. Originally, it was known for fashionable dishes displaying exotic flavors. So, if you feel a little sick from fast food or junk burgers, or tired of rushing about the city, Kamado is a perfect place to feast and release your pent-up emotions. The Nagoya Special Deep Fried Chicken Wings(名古屋炸鸡翅rmb28) are strongly recommended. Meanwhile, you can also try Yakitori(烤鸡肉串) and Sukiyaki Spicy Soup(土香辣汤), both of which are reasonably priced.
